When a Whatcom County homeowner wanted to carve out more space for a wider patio area, Custom Concrete Contracting was hired to get the job done right.
There was an elevation change on their property, so our concrete finishing crew installed a poured-in-place concrete retaining wall with integrated stairs.
A well-placed retaining wall like this one added a lot of visual interest and increased the usable area of their sloped yard.
This project also included the installation of a patio surface, a strip drain to manage surface water and a wide step in front of the sliding door. New concrete stairs allow easy access to upper-level garden areas.
As shown in the photo, the homeowner chose a stamped and stained concrete finish. Numerous stamped concrete designs are available, offering options to replicate slate, flagstone, brick and tile.

Why choose a concrete patio?
Concrete patios offer a combination of durability and low maintenance that makes them a practical and attractive choice for outdoor entertaining. They last much longer than a wood deck, and a professionally installed concrete patio can add to the resale value of your property.
Still wondering whether a concrete patio is the right choice for you. Keep in mind that they can easily accommodate functional additions such as a built-in fire pit, outdoor kitchen and integrated bench seating. You can really up your outdoor entertainment game by installing a long-lasting patio.
How far in advance should patio planning take place?
It will take time to hire a contractor, discuss the project, receive a quote for the job, obtain any required permits and have your project added to the contractor’s schedule. Selecting a contractor in January or February should ensure that your new patio will be ready for the spring and summer season.
